Located on Isla Navarino Puerto Williams is well off the tourist track ; a town of basic facilities, friendly locals and seafaring stories and adventures.

This Chilean navy town attracts an increasing number of tourists to its remote shores on the Beagle Channel. Whether it's just to be at the end of the world, join a voyage to Cape Horn, hop on the weekly cargo ferry for a 34 hour trip through the fiords or hike Circuito de los Dientes, Puerto Williams is the place to do it.

Coming from the Argentinan resort town of Ushuaia, only 80kms north-east on the Beagle Channel, Puerto Williams is a complete contrast. Here it can be difficult to find restaurants because they are in regular houses without any signage. The menu is what is cooking on the stove on the day and it's better to order your meal of choice in advance so preparations can get under way.

Tierra del Fuego

A land of archipelagos, glaciers, floating icebergs and stunted lenga forest on a permanent lean from the relentless winds. The summers are cool and the winters are freezing yet this land captures the imagination of anyone with a taste for adventure. From the 16th century sea voyages of Ferdinand Magellan and Francis Drake to the 19th century explorations of Charles Darwin on the Beagle Tierra del Fuego is irresistable.

Cape Horn

The infamous Cape Horn is 166km from Puerto WIlliams. It is where the Americas end, the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans become one and weather permitting you get to land in this desolate place. Voyages can be arranged with SIM Ltd or Victory Cruises in Puerto WIlliams but it is best to book ahead. If Cape Horn isn't adventurous enough you can continue onto the great white continent of Antarctica.

Circuito de los Dientes

These impressive jagged peaks loom over the town often shrouded in cloud. Hikers need to be well prepared for the 70km, 4 to7 day trek as the extremely changeable climate can bring not only snow but strong west winds that literally blow you over. The small kiosk in the central plaza hires tents, gas cookers etc and also sells maps. The extremely helpful owner can also arrange guides.

Other Attractions

  • Museum Martin Gusinde is in a modern building and relates the history of the region from the Fuegian indians through to today.
  • Yacht Club Micalvi is the meeting place for adventurers from Antarctica or Cape Horn and the only night life in Puerto Williams. The yacht club is an ex-navy supply ship with a bar that opens at 10pm.
  • Cycling the coast road is a pleasure as there is little traffic to throw up dust and stones. On the route information plaques point out ancient middens (camping sites) of the Yamana and explain their customs and hunting methods.
  • Bird Watching opportunities are many but the lakes on the airport road, within walking distance of town, are particularly good morning and evenings
  • Parque Etnobotonico Omora is an educational trail with information plaques about the local flora and fauna.
  • Hike to Cerro Bandera starts by the statue of the Virgin between the airport road and the town. It is clearly marked and takes only 2 hours to reach the summit. From there the views of the town below and the Circuito de los Dientes behind are spectacular.

Accommodation

Accommodation is basic backpacker style but there is plenty available. Check with SIM Ltd or the Puerto WIlliams offical website.

Services

In the Centro Commercial there is a bank with an ATM machine and an internet cafe, however the internet is often not working. The post office is also in this part of town.

Getting There

  • From Punta Arenas there are regular flights with DAP Airlines.
  • From Ushuaia Argentina there are limited boat services which cost USD80 to USD100 for the short journey. A better option is the Ushuaia AeroClub which flies Monday, Wednesday and Friday for USD100 per passenger. The 20 minute flight is in a 4 seater piper. The tourist office can assist with reservations.
